Erected in 1984, the granite monument is dedicated to the memory of the 1st Kansas Colored US Volunteer Infantry and the soldiers who were stationed at Fort Scott during the Civil War. The memorial also list the names of those who died in battle at Sherwood, Missouri, May 18, 1863. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
