Alice Mabel Gray was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Chicago.

In the fall of 1915, she moved to the sand dunes of northwest Indiana with only a jelly jar, knife and a spoon. The Chicago newspapers named her "Diana of the Dunes." She died in 1925 in her little remote shack in Ogden dunes after ten years of living there.

Her obituary was featured on page 1 of the Chicago Tribune with a picture and was printed in the New York Times. Many newspaper and magazines articles continued to be written about her after her death, often inaccurate.

For many years, there was a Diana of the Dunes Festival in Chesterton 1978-1998 (21 years).

Finally in 2010, a factual book was written about her: "Diana of the Dunes - The True Story of Alice Gray" authored by Janet Zenke Edwards.
