James was the son of Elise Harberson and Miller Armstrong Sprouse. He served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, during the Korean War and was severly wounded at the outset of the conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart and, after recovering from his wounds, joined the U.S. Navy. He retired as a 1st Class Photographer's Mate and was assigned to the Fleet Reserve Association. James was also a retired employee of Celanese in Greenville where he worked for 15 years until the plant closed. He later worked as a security officer for Union Bleachery for five years.

James married Janie F. Dukes on 30 Jun 1952 and they had one son.
