Civil War Union Brevet Major General. When the Civil War began, he was a clerk in the House of Representatives, but resigned and was commissioned Major in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry in 1861. Promoted Colonel in command of the 3rd Indiana, he participated in the battles of Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General and led a division at Shenandoah Valley against Confederate General Jubal Early. For his distinguished war service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March of 1865. After the war, he served as a judge of the Marion County, Indiana Criminal Court and was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1880.
