Born in Newton, Illinois on March 3, 1922, he was the son of Charlie Phillips and Lillis (Rideout) Phillips. He served with the U. S. Army during W. W. II. He was a hog farmer and worked for Kennedy's Feed Store in Newton for many years. Orville enjoyed going to sales and auctions. On September 22, 1950, he married Virginia Lee Harper, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Stanley Phillips, Willow Hill, Illinois and Bradley & Cathy Phillips, Poway, California; two granddaughters, Abby & Amanda Phillips, Poway, California; a sister, Mary Baughman, Springfield, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. Orville is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rev. Robert "Bob" Phillips. There will be a public graveside service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday August 31, 2010, at the Mound Cemetery, rural Jasper County, Illinois with Pastor Phil Boyd officiating. There will be no visitation.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Hunt City Community Building with envelops at Pulliam Funeral Home, Oblong and also at the Mound Cemetery. Military Flag Presentation will be made the Oblong American Legion Post #219.
