Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the beginning of the Civil War he was a successful lawyer in practice, active in raising recruits and was appointed Captain in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry in April, 1861. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted Colonel of the 33rd Regiment in 1862 and Brigadier General in January 1863. He participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and was wounded at Gettysburg. Being disabled from further field duty, he served on the staff of General Joseph Hooker and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on August 13, 1865. After the war, he was head surveyor of the Port of Boston.
