Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at in 1841, at the head of his class, served in the Mexican War and was a Major of Engineers, 1848 to 1861. During the Civil War, he conducted the defense of Fort Pickens, Florida and was Promoted Brigadier General in June, 1862. He served with honor at the second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862, where received a severe wound that kept him from further field service. He served as a Superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point until 1864, then supervised the construction of the defenses in front of Nashville and participated in the battle in November 1864. He continued to serve until the end of the war and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
