Civil War Union Brigadier General. A prominent lawyer in practice at the start of the Civil War, he raised the first company of what became the 8th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned Colonel and commander of the unit. He commanded in the Western Virginia campaign of 1861 and was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers in April of 1862. He then served in various district commands with the XIII Corps in Texas and Louisiana throughout 1864 and commanded a division in the Battle of Spanish Fort, Alabama. For serving with distinction, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war, he was appointed the Collector of Revenue for the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, but died of yellow fever on March 14, 1867.
