Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Ireland and studying civil engineering as a youth, Gen. Gamble emigrated to the US in 1838. Having experience with the military he joined the 1st US Dragoons as a private and within a year had advanced to Sgt. Major. He married Sophia Steingrandt and the couple had at least 13 children but some reports have as many as 15. When the Civil War broke out, he was appointed Lt. Colonel and joined the 8th Illinois Calvary. He was wounded in the first year and spent almost a year recuperating and only was able to rejoined his unit during the Battle of Gettysburg. His unit was badly outnumbered but he and his men were able to hold off the rebels until the Union army could get into place. Following the war he was promoted to Brigadier General and mustered out. Military being all he knew, he reentered the service with the rank of major in the 8th U.S. Cavalry and on his way to California to command the Presidio of San Francisco, he was stricken with cholera and died. He was buried in Nicaragua but unfortunately the cemetery was often flooded out and has been obliterated.
