Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He served during the Civil War first as Major of the 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Veterans Reserve Corps. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "efficient and meritorious services". He served in the post-war Army until he resigned in 1868, and that year was elected as a Republican to represent Alabama's 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1868 to 1869.
