American Civil War Brigadier General. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1827 and served for eight years in the artillery and in 1835 he resigned from the service to become an engineer. When the American Civil War broke out in April 1861, he rejoined the US Army at the rank of colonel of the 27th Illinois Infantry and saw action at the Battle of Belmont in Missouri. He then commanded the "Flotilla Brigade" of the Army of the Mississippi during the Battle of Island Number Ten at New Madrid, Missouri. In April 1862 President Abraham Lincoln appointed him Brigadier General of US Volunteers, and commanded the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Mississippi during the siege and Battle of Corinth, Mississippi and later that year he served on the court-martial that convicted Major General Fitz John Porter of cowardice and disobedience. For the remainder the war, he served as commander of the District of East Arkansas. Following the war, he was the government inspector of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1867 to 1869 and also served as a special commissioner of Indian affairs from 1867 to 1868. In July 1867 he was approved as a brevet major general of volunteers. He died at the age of 76. His half brother was Major General John Buford of the Battle of Gettysburg fame.
