He was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1852; chief justice of the Oregon Territory 1853 - 1857; member of State constitutional convention of Oregon in 1858; US Representative from Oregon from 1865 - 1871; Attorney General of the United States under President Ulysses Grant 1872 - 1875; Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1902 - 1905. He died in Portland, Oregon on April 4, 1910.
