U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Georgetown College Washington, D.C., in 1848, from the law department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1850; was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced the practice of law in Lexington, Kentucky. He moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1853 and continued the practice of law. In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John B. Rice, was reelected to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he relocated to the Dakota Territory in 1878 and practiced law until his death at age 59.
