Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. A pre-War Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, he entered the Civil War with a commission of Colonel and commander of the 33rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry in September 1861, and served until his honorable discharge on September 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the War he was elected to represent two different Indiana Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1867 to 1875. First represented the 6th District from 1867 to 1867, then the 5th District from 1869 to 1875. After his Congressional service ended, he served as a Justice of the Montana Territorial Supreme Court from 1884 to 1885.
