Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Kansas Governor. Served in the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 8th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, then as Provost Marshal of Nashville, Tennessee. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war." He served as Governor of Kansas from 1885 to 1889.
