Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He served during the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, then as the Colonel and commander of the 75th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the war he was elected as a republican to represent Indiana's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1875 to 1879.
