Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball for 17 seasons (1935 to 1951) as an Outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics, Chicago White Sox, and Boston Red Sox. Coming up with the A’s in 1935, he would be one of the few stars on the bottom-dwelling Athletics teams of the mid-to-late 1930s. He hit over .300 in each of his first seven season, topping with a .320 average in 1937. In that year he also hit a career-high 25 Home Runs, and was named to the AL All-Star team (he never hit more than 9 homers in any other year). In 1939 he was traded to the Tigers for 2nd Baseman Benny McCoy, but the deal was nullified by Commissioner Kennesaw M. Landis due to fraudulent practices by Detroit. After the 1941 season he was sent to the White Sox, where, although aging, he would flourish, especially on the basepaths. He led the AL in triples in 1943 (12), Doubles in 1945 (35), stole 56 bases in 1943 (finishing 2nd behind George Case’s 61), and was named to the 1945 AL All-Star team (which he missed due to being injured). In mid-1946 the White Sox sent him to the Red Sox, and he subsequently contributed to Boston winning the AL Pennant. In that year’s World Series verses the St. Louis Cardinals, he batted .417 while appearing in 4 games of the 7 game series (which saw the Cards defeat the Red Sox on Enos Slaughter’s famous mad dash from first base in Game 7). He became the 23rd player to get 4 hits in a Series game. After rejoining the A’s in 1949, he played 3 seasons with them before retiring after the 1951 season. He would the spend a total of 13 seasons as a hitting coach for 5 different teams. His career totals were 2,012 Games Played, 2,138 Hits, 1,124 Runs, 89 Home Runs, 679 RBIs and a career .291 Batting Average. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
