Funeral services for James Peter Dubel of Gillette will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home chapel.
Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Dubel, 70 died Thursday, July 29, 1999, on Paulette Park's ranch of natural causes while trying to fight a grass fire.
He was born September 27, 1928, at Burton, Nebraska, to James and Emma Rebecca (Bahr) Dubel. He was raised and educated in Burton and graduated from the nearby Keya Paha County High School in Springview, Nebraska, in 1949.
He entered the U.S. Navy on January 8, 1951, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on November 5, 1954, and returned to work on the family farm on the border of South Dakota and Nebraska.
He married Norma J. Farris on December 21, 1957, in Winner, SD. They lived on the farm until moving to Mora, Minnesota in 1965, where they owned and operated a dairy farm.
In 1974, they moved to Gillette where he worked various jobs including welding. In 1990, his health forced him into semi-retirement and he went to work at the Holiday Inn, Making sure the rooms were in working order for the quests. He also worked part-time as a ranch hand on Paulette Park's ranch.
He was a member of the American Legion in Colome, SD. He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing, hunting, walking and taking pictures. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his Red Heeler, Daisy June.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Dubel of Gillette; two sons, James Rolland Dubel and Larry Raymond Dubel, both of Gillette; two daughters, Chalene Marie "Cheri" Smith of Gillette and Rebecca Ann Kjennmo of Billings, Montana; sister Alta Faye Broadbooks of Gregory, SD; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephew and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a still- born son, Richard Merle Dubel (15504598), his parents and a sister, Avis Kirsch.
