Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1970 to 1977), he played at the first-base and outfielder positions with the Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners. Born Joseph Anthony Lis, he attended Somerville High School (New Jersey), prior to signing as an amateur free agent by the Phillies in 1964. He would make his Major League debut on September 5th, 1970, and appear in 13 games with the Phillies that year. Lis' most productive season was in 1973 with the Twins, when he replaced ailing slugger Harmon Killebrew in the lineup, and recorded 62 hits that season. He concluded his career in 1977, playing 13 games with the Mariners during their inaugural season. In 356 career games, he compiled 182 hits, with a .233 lifetime batting average. Following his playing career, he coached youth baseball and was proprietor of a baseball school.
