Alexander was the son of John Watson Foster who was a civil
War Union Army Officer Commissioned as Major of the 25th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in 1861 and then promotoed to Colonel and Commander of 1st the 65th Indiana Volunteer Mounted Infantry then the 136th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
He was a U.S. Diplomat an appointed as U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1873 to 1880 then as Minister to Russia from 1880 to 1881 which is where Alexander was born. His mother was Mary Parke McFerson Foster daughter of Alexander and Eliza Read McFerson.1y0m12d was was buried mar 22 1882
