Lucy Bearskin was born in Indian City, Payne County, Oklahoma in 1881 to parents George William and Susan E. Spicer Bearskin. Her paternal grandparents were John S. and Sarah Solomon Bearskin. Her maternal grandparents were David and Susan Spicer. Lucy was the fourth child born among her parent's twelve children. The Bearskins were American Indians and they belonged to the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Miami, Oklahoma.

About 1904 Lucy Bearskin married John Chartis Geboe, probably in Wyandotte, Ottawa County, Oklahoma. That's where their five children were born. But, by 1920 they had moved to Joplin, Missouri. However, it appears the family moved back and forth from Joplin to Oklahoma several times over the years.

Family lore says that John Chartis was of French-Canadian descent, but that he was adopted into the Peoria Tribe when he was a young man. It appears his parents died when he was a small child, but this hasn't been proven. Some documents show that John Chartis was born in Kansas, while others show he was born in Joplin, Missouri. So, the details of his birth and the names of his biological parents aren't clear.

John Chartis died in 1939 in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. Lucy passed away in 1946 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.
