George Thom was the son of James Liddell Thom and Agnes Chittick. Both parents were Scottish immigrants to the mining camps in White County, Tennessee.

He served in the Air Force and the US Marine Corps. He was a veteran of WWII.

He married Katherine and had two children, George, Jr. and Kathy.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fairfield and a Mason and a Shriner. He worked at RP McDavid Company.
