Dorothy Marguerite Carpenter Vincent, 88, passed away peacefully with family at her side on October 9, 2010, in Corpus Christi, Texas, after succumbing to lung cancer. She was born August 30, 1922, in Arcadia, Kansas, to Acel Ace Carpenter and Alma Lee Long Carpenter. Dorothy was the second oldest of eight children from that marriage. Later she would have seven more half-brothers and sisters. She came from a very poor family. When she was a child, her dad at various times farmed, and he worked in coal mines and in a factory. She was the oldest daughter and was needed at home to help do chores and care for the younger children, so she wasn't able to continue school after the 8th grade. She once said that, as a child, her ambition was "to grow up, have nice clothes, and be a movie star." She married Harry O. Owen on April 15, 1939, in Kansas City, Kansas. She and Harry had three sons and one daughter. His career took them to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1957, back to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1962, then to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1964. She was a self-taught, gifted seamstress, who made dresses for her daughter and nieces, particularly for special occasions, like Easter. She was a very active person all of her life. She loved attending family gatherings, baking, fishing, and beach-going. She worked as a store clerk in the retail industry and retired from K-Mart. In her later years, she was an avid bingo player.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her ex-husband, Harry Owen; her only daughter, Marilyn Kay Owen Skold; her granddaughter, Carrie Christine Owen; her brothers, Charles F. Carpenter Sr. and Fred Smalley Jr.; and her sisters, Betty Flathers and Helen Katz.

She is survived by three sons, Larry (Janet) Owen, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dennis (Lana) Owen, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Philip Owen Sr, of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is survived by six grandsons, two great-grandsons, and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by four sisters, Mert Winters of Kansas City, Missouri; Penny Brown, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; Jeanne (Marvin) Thomas, of Moreno Valley, California; Sue (Dave) Bowers, of Wahiawa, Hawaii. She is survived by six brothers, Clint (Kay) Carpenter, of Sunrise Beach, Missouri; Mickey (Sandy) Carpenter, of Kansas City, Missouri; Ron (Linda) Carpenter, of Cape Coral, Florida; Randy Carpenter, of Independence, Missouri; Jim (Linda) Smalley, of Shingle Springs, California; Butch (Sylvia) Smalley, of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who will be missed by all of her family and friends. Our family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the staffs of Corpus Christi Nursing and Rehab Center and Angel Bright Hospice.

Arrangements were handled by Charlie Marshall Funeral Home, Aransas Pass, Texas. Interment was in Seaside Cemetery, Corpus Christi, Texas.
