Bartholomew is the son of Thomas and Nancy Ann (Stafford) Jenkins. He was fondly known as "Beth" by family and friends. Beth moved from WV to IN with his parents and 9 siblings when he was just a year old.

Beth married Sarah Jane Favor, Oct. 16, 1862 in Shelby Co., IN. They moved to IA once they were married. They had 9 children: Joseph, Sammy and Denny (twins that died as infants), Maria, Elizabeth, Nellie, Emma, Thomas, and Nancy.

Beth and Sarah were pioneers of Poweshiek County. He became partners in a lumber business with Rodney Clark (later, he bought Rodney out and ran the business by himself). He was, also, a farmer and a school teacher during his lifetime. He moved to Grinnell in 1890 and was chosen Mayor in 1903, serving on the council for 7 years. He was Superintendent of Agriculture of Navaho Indians in New Mexico Association - and in 1908 he was elected President (a position he held until his death).
