Joshua is the son of Thomas and Nancy Ann (Stafford) Jenkins. He married Caroline Cerrene Elder, Jan. 1, 1849 in Brown Co., IN. They had 11 children: Ellender, Ann, Thomas, Elizabeth, Nancy, Louise, Stephen, William, Joseph, Jarrett and Charles.
Joshua was a Farmer, raised stocks, and was handy in woodworking.
Joshua enlisted in Capt. James Targgart's Company, 3rd Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1846. He fought in the Mexican War - engaged in the battle at Buena Vista and other minor battles. On June 24, 1847, Joshua was honorably mustered out of the military.
