Professional Football Player. For seven seasons (1944 to 1950), he played at the left-guard, left-end, right-end and blocking back positions in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions. Born John Joseph Greene, he attended Kiski School (Saltsburg, Pennsylvania), and played collegiate football at the University of Michigan. Selected by Detroit during the 5th round of the 1944 NFL Draft, Greene appeared in 78 career games. Initially a lineman, Lions' head coach Gus Dorais inserted him into the receiving core in 1945; his move proved successful as Greene emerged one of the most productive offensive ends in the NFL during the 1940s. He led the league in 1946 with the longest reception (88-yards), and was NFL leader in 1948 with a 23.8 yard average. He compiled 175 career receptions for 2,965 yards and 26 touchdowns, while serving as team captain twice.
