Massachusetts Governor. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from Boston University with a legal degree in 1926, was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, (1929-35) and was the Massachusetts Attorney General in 1934. During World War II, he served as a US Navy Lieutenant Commander in the North Atlantic sectors. After the war, he practiced law and was elected as a Democrat the 38th Governor of Massachusetts, serving (1949-53). After leaving office, he practiced law until his death from heart disease at age 55 in Boston, Massachusetts.
