Garel Eugene Smith, 89, of Front Royal, Virginia, died on Friday, November 5, 2010, at Heritage Hall.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Masontown Cemetery, Masontown, West Virginia on Thursday, November 11, at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Smith was born August 9, 1921, in Masontown, son of the late Dr. William Ashel and Mary Olive Herring Smith. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and served as a nose gunner on B-24's during World War II. Mr. Smith graduated from West Virginia University in 1948 with a degree in chemistry. He was employed with the Upjohn Company for ten years. He then entered pharmacy school at West Virginia University and graduated in 1962 at the top of his class. He eventually moved to Front Royal where he worked for several different drug stores.

Surviving are his wife Harriette Jeanne Carpenter Smith of Front Royal; two daughters Janet Morley and husband Richard Morley of Gainesville, Ga. and Jean White and husband Alfred L. "Chip" White of Winchester; one brother William Smith of Derby, Kan.; one sister Betty McWhorter of Kennesaw, Ga.; and four grandchildren Dale and Olivia Morley and Charles and Dana White.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Appalachian Project, P.O. Box 459, Hagerhill, KY, 41222.
