Literary Scholar, Philosopher. He was a member of the first graduating class of Tokyo Senmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University) and from 1900 to 19005 he studied in Germany and obtained a doctorate in philosophy. After returning to Japan, he was appointed a professor and later an administrator at Waseda University.
