Painter. He was a British painter of the traditional style during the period of academic art of Victorian London. Using huge canvases, his genre was mythological and Biblical paintings and portraits. His oil-on-canvas pieces show a sharp light and darkness contrast, with soft and hard edges of paint making the subject life-like. Born the son of a Jewish cigar magnate Joseph Solomon and his wife Helena Lichenstadt, he was one of twelve children in the household. His siblings included other artists, suffragettes and Zionists. Besides studying under several well-respected artists, he was educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Munich Academy in Germany, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. As early as 1881, he had exhibitions at the Royal Academy, the New Gallery, and the Society of British Artists. He was the second Jewish artists to be elected to a full-member of the Royal Academy in 1906. In 1885, he was a founding member of the New English Art Club (NEAC), which was an alternative venue to the Royal Academy. After joining the Royal Society of British Artists, he was elected president in 1919. Besides painting portraits of himself, his siblings and his wife and children, the subject of his paintings included a British soldier in a World War I uniform; British painter Arthur Hacker RA; the architect Sir Aston Webb, and later in his life, the royals King George V, Queen Mary, and Prince Edward, who was later King Edward VIII; and a host of portraits that the subject is unknown in the 21st century. His brother-in-law and noted architect Delissa Joseph built two studios for him. His paintings have gone to auction at Christie's Auction House in London and Sotheby's in New York City for thousands of dollars. His 1887 painting of "Samson and Delilah," which shows several partly nude muscular males, is on displayed at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He drew several illustrations for books and designed a stained-glass window for the Hampstead Synagogue. In 1897 Solomon married Ella and the couple had three children. His wife and children often acted as models for his paintings. With his siblings, he was involved in the Jewish community. He was a founder and the first President of the Jewish cultural and philanthropic organization known as the Maccabees and the main art adviser to its offshoot, the Jewish Education Aid Society. During World War I, he was the leading adviser, at the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Engineers, to the War Office on camouflage, working in particular on tree observation posts and arguing tirelessly for camouflage netting. He started a school teaching camouflage, which the army eventually accepted management. In 1920, he published a book, "Strategic Camouflage." Many of his techniques were invaluable to the military during World War II. In 1910 he authored the book "The Practice of Oil Painting and of Drawing as Associated with It." His younger sister was Lily Delissa Joseph, a well-known artist.
