Novelist. His first novel in a series of four "Jinsei Gekijo" (Life Theatre) was made into a film in 1936. Three more followed, most notably "Jinsei gekijô: Hishakaku to Kiratsune" in 1968. He is also known for "The Imaginary Ghetto." Over his lifetime he is credited with seventeen novels and screenplays. He has one small acting credit in 1953, but is mostly remembered today for his stories. The house where he spent the last years of his life is now a museum in Ota, Japan
