Professional Race Car Driver. Stan Bowman made a surprising debut in the USAC sprint car championship in April of 1962 by placing first at the Eldora Speedway, in a race that was cut short due to rain. His skills had earned him an opportunity to enter the 1963 Indianapolis 500 with a competitive team. Those plans were tragically interrupted when he was critically injured at the Terre Haute "Action Track" on June 17, 1962 when his car flipped four times during a race. Five days later, he died from head injuries in St. Anthony's Hospital and his death marked the first casualty at the Terre Haute track. The car, in which he was critically injured on June 17, 1962, was the same car, after being rebuilt, in which 1955 Indianapolis 500 winner Bob Sweikert had lost his life at Salem, Indiana on June 17, 1956.
