Hall of Fame College Football Player and Announcer. Played for the University of Michigan, and won the Heisman Trophy in 1940. Played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams from 1946-1947. Father of actors Kelly, Kristin, and Mark Harmon. He was called "Old 98" by his teammates. He enlisted as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot in World War II (WWII) where he received the Purple Heart medal and a Silver Star for actions in China with the 449th Fighter Squadron. In 1954, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
