Played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams from 1946-1947. Father of actors Kelly, Kristin, and Mark Harmon. He was called "Old 98" by his teammates. He enlisted as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot in World War II (WWII) where he received the Purple Heart medal and a Silver Star for actions in China with the 449th Fighter Squadron. In 1954, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
