Maria Polk Walker was the first child of nine children of Col. Joseph Knox Walker and Augusta TABB Walker and a great niece of President James K. Polk. As a child she lived in Washington DC in the White House and was educated at the Convent of the Visitation in Washington.
She married Brig General Frank C. Armstrong (see family link) on 27 April 1863, Columbia, TN, in a full military wedding of calvary with Generals Van Dorn and Nathan Forest in attendance. Maria's sister, Sally Walker, was an attendant to the bride. Maria was give away by her grand-father, James Walker, who only a few weeks before had celebrated his golden wedding. Maria P. Walker was married to F. C. Armstrong by Rev. Pease of the Episcopal Church.
Two children were born of this marriage: Isabelle "Belle" Armstrong, 29 Feb 1866 in LaGrange, Ga(see link); Knox Walker Armstrong, 1865 in New Orleans, La; died 1867 in Memphis, Tn.
In Aug, 1872 for health reasons Maria had gone to Springfield, Mo where she died 26 Aug 1872 and was buried at the Catholic Cemetery. A search query to the Catholic Cemetery was not successful as they did not have a "marker" on file for her.
