KIRKLIN, MARGARET (PEGGY) K., 93, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on April 8, 2009 at her residence. Mrs. Kirklin was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John W. Kirklin and son, John E. Kirklin. She is survived by her daughter, Helen W. Kirklin and husband Robert Ray; son, Dr. James K. Kirklin and wife Terry; grandchildren: Kimberly Kirklin and husband Stephen Mangina, Adam Kirklin and wife Nicole, Brad Vernon, Christopher Kirklin, Katherine Kirklin, Margaret Ray, and Eleanor Ray; great grandchildren: Antonio Kirklin Alonso, Marek Mangina and Benjamin Kirklin. The Kirklin family name has become a symbol of dedication to medicine. Mrs. Kirklin was a physician and director of the surgeon's assistant program at UAB. She was married to Dr. John W. Kirklin former chairman of the UAB Department of Surgery. Their son, James K. Kirklin is a cardiac surgeon and Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB. A private funeral service will be held April 11, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the John W. and Margaret Kirklin Research Fund for Cardiothoracic Surgery, c/o Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, UAB, 760 THT, 1900 University Blvd., Birmingham, AL 35294.
