From an article about Ellery M. Merriss, Past and Present of Macon County, p 366:
David Van Gundy, son of David & Anna Wissler Van Gundy, of German descent, and a miller by trade, followed that occupation in PA in early life. Later he removed to Ohio and from there to what is known as the American Bottom near St. Louis, Missouri. There he wedded Miss Mary Conrad (Coonrod), who was born in Madison County, MO. Mr Van Gundy spent his last days with his son George in Scott County, Illinois , where he died in 1862, his wife having passed away some time previously. They had eight children, of whom five are still living, namely: Mary, wife of John Smallwood, a retired farmer living near Lincoln in Tezewell County, Illinois; John , a retired farmer of Decatur; Adam, a retired farmer of Bluffs, Scott County; Martha, wife of Erasmus Allison, who is living retired in St. Louis, MO; and Nancy, wife of our subject: Ellery.

David Jr VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 9 Oct 1790 in PA. He died on 1 Sep 1861 in Scott Co, IL. He was buried in McCaleb Cem, Bluffs, Scott Co, IL. He married Mary Ann COONROD on 4 May 1821 in Madison Co, IL.

David was the originator of the central Illinois branch of Van Gundys. His occupation was miller but he was also listed as a farmer in the census records.
