Born and raised in Newton, IL, she was the youngest child of four and the only daughter of V.A. and Helen Byers Jones. Graduated from Eastern Illinois Teachers College. She began her teaching career in Morton, IL, and later taught business classes at Hamilton Southeastern High School for many years. She earned her Masters Degree at Butler University in 1975. After retirement, she and her husband Walt made their home in Florida.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, American Legion.

Shirley J. Mellinger, 83, formerly of Fishers, IN, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in New Port Richey, Fl. She was born April 15, 1927 in Newton, Il. to the late V.A. and Helen B. Jones. She married Walter T. Mellinger on Jan. 28, 1951. He died Oct. 5, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, R. Earl, Herschel and Wayne.
Surviving are three children, two daughters and one son; four grandchildren.
