Civil War Confederate Soldier, Historian. He served as a Private in Company H, 1st Tennessee Infantry, CSA, during the Civil War, fighting in most of the large battles of the Western Theater. He was famous as the author of "Company Aytch," his memoirs, published in 1882. This book has become one of the most popular of Confederate soldier reminiscences.
