Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was then commissioned first as Major of the 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, then as Colonel and commander of the 25th Iowa Volunteer Infantry regiment. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865, for "Faithful and Meritorious Services."
