United States Marine Corps Private. During the battle for the Island of Iwo Jima, Pvt. Charlo reached the summit of Mount Suribaci, but did not participate in either the original flag raising, or in the iconic flag raising photograph by Joe Rosenthal. Private Charlo was killed in action on March 2, 1945.

Indian Warrior Dies Fighting- Louis Charlo's grandcfather was one of the noted Chiefs who fought in the "Indian Wars" in the 1800s- Louis Charlos died fighting on Iwo Jima as a member of the United States Marine Corps- The Charlo family had been leaders of the Salish tribe, to which the Peigan tribe of southern Alberta is related.- Prior to 1870 the South Peigan tribe lived in Montana and fled to Canada (southern Alberta) during the "Indian Wars"- Charlo was the son of Entonine Charlo, living near Evaro, Montana. Entonine Charlo was a son of Chief Martin Charlo, last of the fighting Salish chiefs.- Louis Charlo was killed Mar 2, a week after he and 3 companions scaled Mount Suribachi on Iwo. Two hours later a patrol also reached the peak and planted the American flag.
