|Death: ||Sep. 22, 1692|
She was the wife of Isaac Esty, daughter of William & Joanna Towne and sister of Rebecca Nurse (executed for withcraft), Sarah Cloyse (barely escaped execution for witchcraft) and my ancestor, EDMUND TOWNE.
Isaac & Mary Esty owned & occupied a large farm at Topsfield and were the parents of seven children.
She was arrested on April 22, 1692 for practicing withcraft which allegedly caused Mary Herrick to have fits, and was released on May 18th. During the time of her release, Mary Herrick experienced worse fits. At midnight after two days of freedom, Mary Esty was awakened and torn from her family and taken back to prison. She was tried and condemned to death on September 9th, and was executed on Sept. 22nd.
In November, 1692, Mary Herrick testified that Esty had visited her and told she had been put to death wrongfully and was innocent of witch craft. The Esty family received 20 pounds compensation for wrongful execution in 1711 by the government.
"The lord above knows my Innocencye ... as att the great day win be known to men and Angells. I Petition to your honours not for my own life for I know I must die, and my appointed time is sett but the Lord he knowes it is that if it be possible no more Innocent blood may be shed ..." Mary Esty (September 1692. Written while in prison awaiting execution.)
PLEASE NOTE: THE PLACE OF MARY ESTY/EASTY'S BURIAL IS UNKNOWN. I HAVE READ THAT THE BODIES OF THOSE WHO WERE HANGED WERE THOWN IN A DITCH. THE LOCATION OF THIS DITCH IS UNKNOWN. THIS IS WHY MY MEMORIAL HAS HER LISTED AS A "NON-CEMETERY BURIAL". THERE ARE TWO OTHER MEMORIALS FOR MARY ON FAG, #8301 and #97690228 and she is NOT buried at either location, they are cenotaphs.
