A resident of Torrance, CA, passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Born in Redondo Beach, CA in 1928, he was 82 when he died. Jim was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church where he served as head usher for many years. Jim had served in the army and was posted in Berlin following the end of World War II. He graduated from Redondo Union High School after being discharged. He went on to have a career with GTE telephone company for more than thirty years. He also worked on the Parks and Recreation Commission and had a great interest in Redondo Beach politics. An avid fan of sports, his biggest love was held for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football. Jim is survived by wife, Virginia Harkins of Torrance, CA; sons, Mike (Yolanda) Harkins of Simi Valley, CA, Alan (Julie) Harkins of Torrance, CA and Brian (Frank Rook) Harkins of Van Nuys, CA; and 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher and Lauren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and William Harkins and his first wife, Elizabeth. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rice Mortuary on Sunday, November 28, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Service will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at St. James from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
