BOY STEPS OFF
STONE LEDGE IN
CRYSTAL LAKE

Victor Jenkins,7, Only Son of
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Jenkins,
Dies

MOTHER NEAR SCENE

No Witnesses to Tragedy,
Body Accidentally Discov-
ered by Diver

Marion County's third swimming fatality this summer occurred Sunday afternoon at Crystal Lake Park when Victor Jenkins 7, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd V. Jenkins, 258 Lincoln av was drowned while bathing.

No one saw the lad go down although scores of bathers were swimming within a radius of 4 feet.

His mother with a party of friends was bathing in shallow water in the wading pool.

The father after warning his son to stay on the inside of the cement wall had returned to the bathhouse about 100 yards from the diving pavilion.

In his absence, the boy waded on the west side of the cement wall and stepped off the stone ledge into 10 feet of water.

Unable To Swim

He had just eaten a heavy picnic dinner and it is thought he was seized with cramps and went down, unable to make an outcry. He was unable to swim.

Discovery of the body was made accidentally by Earl P. Conley, 40, of 408 E. _____ st, he was diving for stones for his own boy.

In swimming under water with his eyes open Conley saw the body of the Jenkins youngster lying at the bottom of the pool.

At first Conley said he thought the boy was also diving for stones. On second glance, seeing that he failed to move he swam over and brought him to the surface.

For three hours, the Red Cross life saving examiners worked over the body. But the boys heart action had stopped and all efforts to bring him back to life were futile. The remains were taken to the Schaffner Funeral Home.

It is thought that the body was submerged five minutes before it was found.

Just how the accident occurred or how long the body was under water will possibly never be known.

Mother Prostrated

The mother of the boy is today reported to be prostrated at her home.

The child was born in Marion February 18, 1919 and had lived in this city since birth.

Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Baptist Church at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will take place in the Marion Cemetery.

Four of the examiners who took turns in working over the lad's body were Bernard Flanningan, N. Seffner av, John Wiedemann, S. Main st, Nelson Irvin, Quarry st and Robert Smart, 4196 E. George st life guard. The name of the fifth examiner could not be learned. The prone methods of resuscitation were used.
