Dr. Henry F. Hereford, a physician, and one of the oldest residents of Jackson county, died at 8 a.m. July 5, 1900 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ada H. Elkins, 903 Forest avenue. He was one of Kansas City's oldest and highly esteemed residents. Dr. Hereford was born in Tecumseh, Ala., in 1827, and moved with his parents first to Boonville and then, at age 14, to Independence, Mo.
He was educated in McKendree college of Lebanon, Ill., and in 1849 was graduated from the St. Louis medical college. After being graduated he travelled for two years in Old Mexico and then returned to Westport, Mo., in 1851 and began the practice of medicine.
In 1852 he married Miss Martha A. Garth. When the Civil War broke out he sided with the Confederacy and the feeling in Westport was so strong against him that in 1862 he went to California for three years. After the war he returned to Kansas City and resumed the practice of his profession.
Dr. Hereford organized the medical department of the university medical college of this city and was president of the faculty and professor of obstetrics until 1886 when he retired on account of poor health. He was appointed by Gov. Phelps as a member of the first state board of health. He was a physician of high standing and was beloved by patients and profession alike. He was always ready in charity cases and his gentle character, generosity, integrity and love of age and youth made him beloved in the community.
Dr. Hereford was one of the best known physicians in the state. He left a widow and two children, a daughter, Mrs. Ada H. Elkins of this city, and a son, Dr. Frank Hereford of Alpine, Calif.
Dr. Hereford's funeral was held at 2 p.m. July 7, 1900, at the home of his daughter.
