Edmund Schriver was born in York County, Pennsylvania, the son of Daniel & Rebecca Schriver. He married Harriette Louise Warren, but they had no children, in part because Harriet died in a sledding accident in 1859.

Edmund was a West Point graduate, class of 1833, and the army assigned the new 2nd lieutenant to the 2nd U.S. Artillery, serving in the Seminole War. He resigned the army at the rank of captain July 31, 1846. When the Civil War began, he reentered the service at the rank of lieutenant colonel and second in command of the 11th U.S. Infantry. Promotion followed rapidly, first to chief of staff, 1st Corps, Army of the Potomac, to colonel and inspector-general March 13, 1863, a brevet to brevetted brigadier general August 1, 1864, and major general March 13, 1865. After the war, he served as inspector general of the army and retired in January 1881. He died in Washington DC.
