Producer, Director, Film Archivist. He will be remembered for his prolific career in the film industry from the 1950s through the 1980s, yet he left a legacy in his vast collection of films. The collection began with his concern about the demise caused by improper storage of old films. His film industry career started as an accountant with 20th Century-Fox Studios in the early 1950s. He began purchasing stock footage from the major studios including ABC News, MGM, Paramount and Fox and then renting it to various motion picture and television production companies. This became his main income. He supplied shots of Adolf Hitler for various films; the dirigible Hindenberg for the film “Hindenberg;” and shots of the Concorde for the movie “Airplane.” The Sherman Grinberg Film Library, Inc. has archived his vast collection, which contains movie films and newsreel footage of 35 mm black and white films dating from 1895 to 1957. He purchased old newsreels from Paramount and American Pathe, the oldest newsreel services, showing W.C. Fields on the Paramount Studio set during the 1933 California earthquake; the violence of the 1937 Chicago police strike; and in 1944 Frank Sinatra with his screaming teenage fans. Although no longer owned by the Grinberg family, the library is located in Los Angeles, California, and according to the library's website, it is “the world oldest and largest private film archive with 20 million feet of film.” Most recently, the library started digitizing his old film collection using a special scanner as 20% of the collection had disintegrated even with what was thought to be proper archiving. Starting in 1961 through 1963, he is credited with being the Production Supervisor of 58 one-hour episodes of the television documentary series, “Biography.” The show was narrated by journalist, Mike Wallace. Each hour episode recounted the life of well-known celebrities of history or current news such as sports figures, politicians, or kings and queens; President Harry S. Truman, Adolf Hitler, and Franklin D. Roosevelt received two one-hour episodes each. He was involved with writing, directing and producing“Battleline,” a five-episode TV series from 1963 through 1964 on the Pacific front during World War II. He is credited with being the producer, along with directing and writing some of the episodes, of the “Untamed Frontier,” a seven-episode TV series from 1967 to 1969. He wrote the film “Black Water Gold” in 1970. The oldest of two sons, his parents were Shea Irving Grinberg, a sheet metal worker, and his wife Sophie Maser; both were born in Romania. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy Reserves from July 16, 1945 to July 25, 1946. He was married with two daughters with the youngest, Leslie, predeceasing him in 1979. He died from cancer at the age of 54.
