Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted in the Union Army at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on April 24, 1861, and was mustered in Washington, DC on July 27 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company D, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry). He was promoted to Captain on June 26, 1861, Lieutenant Colonel on May 5, 1862, and to Colonel and regimental commander on June 1, 1862. Charged for "abandoning his post" on picket duty, a court-martial found him not guilty of all charges and specifications. He was honorably discharged at term's end August 19, 1864, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant conduct at the Battle of the Wilderness Va".
