Michigan Governor. He graduated from Union College in 1831, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1834 and then established his legal firm in Eaton, New York. Moving to Michigan in 1836, he entered into politics, serving as a member of the Michigan State Senate, (1839-40, 42-43) and was the Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, (1846-47). After Governor Alpheus Felch resigned from office, in 1847, he was elected as a Democrat the sixth Governor of Michigan, serving until 1848. After his brief time as Governor, he served as Mayor of Adrian, Michigan, in 1858 and served twelve years as justice of the peace.
