Edward J. Denham


Edward J. Denham, formerly of Ridley Park Edward J. Denham, 92, formerly of Ridley Park for 50 years, died on November 27, 2010. He was born January 15, 1918 in Chester, to the late Charles and Harriet (nee Reynolds) Denham. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Margaret (nee McDade) Denham who passed away in 1995 after 43 years of marriage. Mr. Denham was employed by BP Oil Refinery (formerly Sinclair Oil Refinery) in Marcus Hook, as a laboratory technician until his retirement in 1980 after 43 years of service. Mr. Denham loved to take long walks in his neighborhood where he enjoyed speaking with his neighbors. He was a member of St. Madeline Parish. Mr. Denham was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1934 - 1936 based in Cross Fork, Pa. He was a member of the work detail under the direction of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters. Mr. Denham served in the Army of the United States in World War II from June 1942 to November 1945 in Europe. He was an MP in England before landing at Normandy. He was a member of the 826th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the 9th Engineer Command in Belgium as a Mine Detector Operator. This command organization was one of the first engineer command organizations to land in Normandy, arriving in France on D-Day plus six to build some of the first air fields on the continent. He was proud of his commendations for his mine clearing at Cherbourg Harbor. He was a member of an Army liberation force that liberated Buchenwald Jewish Concentration Camp. Cpl. Denham held the Rifle Sharpshooter Medal, the European Theater of Operations ribbon, five gold overseas stripes and the Good Conduct decoration. Decorations and Citations also included the World War II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze service stars. The Battles and Campaigns included: The Battle of the Bulge, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, GO 33 & 40 WD 45. Mr. Denham's name is registered on The Wall of Liberty which was erected by the Battle of Normandy Foundation. The Wall of Liberty is situated in Normandy, France, near the invasion beaches where American forces landed on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He is survived by daughter Mary Kay Denham (Doug Carson) of Warrington and son E. Joseph Denham, Jr., D.O., Esq. (Deborah) of Exton; and is also survived by a granddaughter, Amber of Exton. Relatives and friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday, December 4, in the Church of St. Madeline, Penn St. & Morton Ave., Ridley Park, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Michael Cemetery, Chester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edward Denham's memory to Villa Maria High School Academy, 370 Old Lincoln Hwy., Malvern, PA 19355, Attn. Sr. Carmel.
