Theologian. He was a major controversial theology professor at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He propounded the theological system that would become known as "Arminianism." His arguments, further developed after his death by associates Simon Episcopius and Jan Uytenbogaert, were presented in the "Articles of Remonstrance" in 1610. The basic five points of Arminianism as presented in the Articles were fought against by the followers of John Calvin's "Calvinism" whose prepared five points to attempt to refute the teaching of Arminius. The primary examples of Arminianism have been in the work of John and Charles Wesley as well as many revival meetings both in England and America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, some Methodist churches and Free Will Baptist churches still hold to an Arminian theology.
